Black gives way
A shapeless dark transforms into a colourful, fluid surface.
Inspired by long hours of waiting and being rewarded by a most beautiful sunrise.
Materials and Process
A 24mm thick red oak board is traced along the growth lines digitally to create an exact recess along those lines using a CNC router.
Slots are cut using the same machine and fitted with 164 slices of paper.
The 3D profile is created by painting abstract, flowing lines with ink and using the color values as representation for height.
Painting is done using an airbrush. The black side is painted with ultra absorbent pigment. With the right lighting conditions it is indistinguishable from a flat surface.
