Ash Wood Flow

A Valley of Fluid Motion

Muted blues and shades of purple create high waves paving their way through cavities almost hidden under their surface.

Inspired by fluid dynamics and the characterstic turbulences when one liquid flows into another, this sclupture captures dynamic movement as a snapshot that invites the viewer to explore its facets through their own movement.

Materials and Process

A 6cm thick board of ash wood has a pocket cut with a CNC router, a slotted spine left uncut.

Recessions are then sculpted freehand with an angle grinder. A 3D object - digitally created using an image of the recessions as a guide - is sliced into 183 vector shapes and cut out of paper using a laser cutter.

After fitting the paper slices onto the spine, the sculpture is colored using an airbrush.
